$2-5 minimum for standard orders, or 15-20% of order total. Factor in distance—longer deliveries deserve higher tips.

Taxi / Rideshare

15-20% of fare is standard. Minimum $1-2 for short rides. Add more for helping with luggage or extra stops.

Bartender

$1-2 per drink or 15-20% of total bar tab. Higher tips for complex cocktails or attentive service.

Hair Salon / Barber

15-20% of service cost is standard. Tip stylists, colorists, and other service providers directly if possible.

Hotel Staff

Bellhop: $1-2 per bag. Housekeeping: $2-5 per night. Concierge: $5-10 for special arrangements.

Takeout

Optional: $1-2 for small orders, or 10-15% for larger orders. Appreciates counter staff effort.

How to Calculate Tips Manually

Basic Tip Formula:

Tip Amount = (Bill Amount × Tip Percentage) ÷ 100

Example: $100 bill, 20% tip

($100 × 20) ÷ 100 = $20 tip

Quick Mental Math Trick:

  • For 10% tip: Move decimal point left once. $100 → $10
  • For 15% tip: Take 10%, add half of that. $100: 10% = $10, + $5 = $15
  • For 20% tip: Double the 10% amount. $100: 10% = $10, × 2 = $20
  • For 18% tip: 15% + small extra (roughly 3% more)

How to Split Bills Fairly

Method 1: Equal Split (Easiest)

Everyone pays the same amount regardless of what they ordered.

Each person = (Bill + Tip) ÷ Number of People

Example: $100 bill, $20 tip, 4 people = ($120) ÷ 4 = $30 each

Method 2: Proportional Split (Fair)

Each person pays based on their share of the bill.

Person's share = (Their bill ÷ Total bill) × (Total + Tip)

Example: Person A ordered $30, Person B ordered $70. Total $100 + $20 tip.

Person A: ($30/$100) × $120 = $36

Person B: ($70/$100) × $120 = $84

Method 3: Separate Checks (Simplest)

Each person pays their own amount + appropriate tip. No splitting needed. Simplest for unequal orders.

Tipping in Special Situations

Tipping with Coupons: Calculate tip on original pre-coupon amount. Workers earned their tip regardless of discount.
Tipping on Takeout: Optional but appreciated. $1-2 minimum or 10% of order.
Large Groups: Many restaurants automatically add 18-20% gratuity for parties 6+. Check your bill.
Bad Service: Still tip 10-15% unless service was genuinely dangerous or rude. Most workers are doing their best.
International Travel: Tipping culture varies. Research destination—some countries it's insulting, others it's mandatory.
Cashless/Card Payments: Tipping screens now appear everywhere. You choose to tip—don't feel pressured on low-service transactions.

Should I tip on pre-tax or post-tax amount?

What if people ordered different amounts?

If splitting equally despite different orders: use even split (divide total by people). If splitting proportionally: calculate each person's percentage of total bill, apply same percentage to total including tip.

How do I calculate tip on a percentage basis?

How do I handle tipping with coupons?

Best practice: calculate tip on the pre-coupon amount (original bill). This ensures servers/workers are fairly compensated. Some calculate on post-coupon amount, but pre-coupon is more considerate.
